Go Your Own Way at Skins' Fleetwood Mac & Cheese Night

Rich, fried, buttery, potato-y vessels loaded with flavor combinations that go down rather well with craft beer, late nights and good times. Ha, who am I kidding, EVERYTHING goes down well with beer. You heard that right buddy, loaded potato skins are back with a bang (and a generous portion of bacon) and are currently being served at Old Street’s The Magic Roundabout by street food pop-up Skins and we could not be any happier. Well, unless they were to stuff it with, say, Mac and Cheese or risotto. Oh, that’s exactly what they do? Well paint me green and call me a cucumber.

We were invited down to the first of a series of “Fleetwood Mac & Cheese Nights” hosted by Skins last Thursday and holy macaroni was it good! The premise of the night is to rock up, eat mac n cheese in a skin, listen to Fleetwood Mac and repeat. Well, you don’t have to tell us twice. Striding over to Skins we noted the 2-for-1 Mac N Cheese offer and confidently ordered two servings each from this 80s themed hole in the wall.

Mac n cheese stuffed potato skins. Crap, how can I ever follow my diet when these things exist? No I’ll go my own way! Go my own way. Just imagine it: a cheesy, carby, crispy, spicy little cup of wonder. It’s not often that street food reduces me to song, but then it’s not often that I find myself putting a fluffy potato parcel of such excellence into my mouth. House mac n cheese is topped with salty bacon, crispy onions, jalapeños, sriracha butter and parsley. Skins are not afraid of spicing things up, which both I and my mouth commend them for.

Listening to the wind blow, running in the shadows, we waited for our second round. Of course we wanted to try more of their skins, how couldn’t we? With various concoctions involving ingredients such as beetroot risotto, Ribman pork rib meat, crackling, venison sausage and pickled pears (not all in one go mind, that’d be too much even for me), why would you just try one? So next up was the Mighty Mexican – two potato skins stuffed with slow cooked chilli and 24 hour beef brisket, topped with lime yoghurt, toasted corn and sesame seeds with a garnishing of coriander. An inspired combination of flavours, but also messy as hell. Maybe don’t bring a date.

They have sides too, including chickpea fries with sage, parmesan and truffle salt. Sorry, I just did a Homer Simpson style drool. I hadn’t even go to tell you about the selection of slaws such as the Kohlrabi Barbie which features kohrabi (clue’s in the name Sherlock), courgette, radish, green mango, lime and ginger dressing, toasted seeds and basil. Push that boat out.

If you want to try it for yourselves, then get your bones down to The Magic Roundabout ASAP and keep your eyes peeled for the next 2-for-1 Fleetwood Mac & Cheese Night over here. They also cater for vegan warriors and other dietary requirements.

Also, these guys are seriously good eggs – any waste is cooked up and given to local homeless folk. Nice one.

Skins can be found at The Magic Roundabout in Old Street, who are currently celebrating a very retro winter wonderland paying homage to the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
