Great British Veg Off: Vegan Street Food Battle

Written by: Sophie Taylor

“I’m on the veg… of reeeeason”

Sang Lady Gaga, whilst cavorting around a staircase in shorts.

The very same can be said of Kerb Street Food’s latest event organisers.

The amount of quality vegetarian food stalls they’ve gathered together for us is teetering on the downright unreasonable. It’s not fair on our stomachs, nor on our eyes that are bigger than said stomachs.

Eight vegan loving, mouth watering contenders are battling it out this weekend at #LivingOnTheVedge.

North Four, North London magazine, eat chay, street food, vegan, banh mi, korean, vegetarian, food festival, kerb food

Over Friday and Saturday at Kings Cross you can navigate amongst non vegan sounding delights such as deep fried buffalo wings, BBQ bahn mi and ‘chicken’ sliders.

For the sweet tooth (that’s all of us really isn’t it) there are Young Vegans chocolate peanut butter mud pie brownies to be had, all washed down with a well stocked bar serving up some vegan specials.

Our best guess to win the Kerb Golden Carrot is the Greedy Khao thai red curry, with tofu and butternut squash pillows on soy sesame slaw and horn mali rice. Or perhaps it will be reigning champions, Petare with their Venezuelan chip butty: arepa stuffed with cassava chips, sweet fried plantain, ‘feta’, avocado and garlic sauce.

North FOur, North London magazine, temple of seitan, vegan, vegetarian, burger, fries, chicken

No, wait, it’s got to be Lemlem Kitchen and their afro-taco served on injera with a red cabbage and ginger slaw with pickled chillies and seeds. Surely? Oh who even knows! Chow down and be merry!

Every ticket holder receives eight portions (one dish from every trader with the option to buy extra portions of course. We are hungry beasts) plus a free cocktail on entry.

Once you’ve tried all 8 you can vote for your favourite at the VEG wall of fame. Dine wisely veganists. Your time has come.

Kerb, Living On The Vedge

Friday 18th 6-11pm & Saturday 19th August 12 – 5PM or 6-11pm.

Top 4 'Christmas is just a bad excuse for a' Winter Markets

By gum there are a lot of winter markets this year. Don’t let our Grinch-esq vibes put you off (I’m more of a Pancake Day person myself) because, if you’re into markets, you’ll probably like these. Read on, if you’re merrier than us.

God bless the Queen... of Hoxton. Or, more specifically, their rooftop - which happens to be one of our favourites in this here city of London. Theatre: What Shadows

Recent times have seen an unnerving surge in right-wing politics. President Trump’s campaign to ‘make America great again’ saw him make the audacious promise to ‘build a wall’. France saw the uneasy ascent of Marine Le Pen’s National Front in its general elections and Germany’s AfD, (the first openly nationalist party in almost six decades) celebrated an unprecedented third place victory in its recent elections.

Magic Roundabout's Retro Winter Wonderland

Summer is officially over. We're not sure it ever began in the first place. I guess that's one of the few downsides of living in London (other than crippling debt, tube strikes and Boris Johnson), but I digress... Magic Roundabout Old Street is raising the bar for winter, transforming the site into a tented, heated, 'Decades' inspired wonderland.

We Spent the Night in Alcotraz

Getting shouted at by a burly prison guard with a buzz cut and an offensively loud American accent isn't usually the way one wishes to begin one's night. Nevertheless, as I clamber into a very large (cheers guys) orange jumpsuit, the guard shoves a bottle of Conkers Gin wrapped in a thin towel (no fluffy Egyptian cotton here lads), into my now somewhat clammy hands. Whispering hastily at me to not get caught by the warden I'm ushered off in single file into the depths of Alcotraz.
